Students from India now outnumber those from China in 24 U.S. states, including Illinois, Texas and Michigan, which rank among the top destinations for international students. For the second consecutive year, America's graduate programs were the main attraction for international students, the study finds. Taken together, those three fields account for more than half of all international students in the United States. The surge nearly brings international numbers back to their pre-pandemic highs, with a peak of almost 1.1 million students in 2018. University leaders say they're important for global exchange, and they're also important for revenue — international students are usually charged higher tuition rates, effectively subsidizing college for U.S. students.

CNN —For a group of roughly two dozen displaced Afghan university students, the future feels uncertain. More than 100 displaced Afghan students – 80 of whom were in Iraq – have already come to the US, where they are studying at more than 45 universities, according to sources familiar with the situation. The students told CNN they don’t have any clear sense of when they will get approval to come to the US, and they are worried about what the continued delay means for their future. “We Afghans lost almost everything, and this scholarship in the US is a very big opportunity for us,” a third student told CNN. A US State Department spokesperson said they are “aware of the Afghan students at the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani,” but could not comment on individual cases.

The number of American citizens studying in China in the 2020-21 academic year was down 97% from two years prior. HONG KONG—Strict pandemic restrictions helped push the number of American university students in China to its lowest level in more than two decades—382 students in the 2020-21 academic year. Now, with China reopening its borders, the question is whether they will come back. During that academic year, the most recent for which data is available, the number of American citizens studying in China was down 97% from roughly 12,000 in 2018-19, and even further below the peak of nearly 15,000 a decade ago, according to data from the U.S. State Department and the Institute of International Education, a New York-based nonprofit.

At Georgia Tech, applications from India surpassed those from China for the first time last year. International students returned to U.S. college and university campuses in droves last fall, with schools recovering a portion of the enrollment they lost when visas were hard to come by and the nation closed its borders during the depths of the pandemic. Enrollment by international students rose by 3.8% to 948,519 in the 2021-2022 school year, compared with 914,095 the prior year, according to a new report by the nonprofit Institute of International Education and U.S. State Department.
